Josh Payne is appointed as a Justice of the Peace

Josh Payne about his appointment as a Justice of the Peace

Congratulations to Josh Payne on his nomination, acceptance and appointment as a Justice of Peace.
To become a Justice of the Peace (JP) is a lengthy process, nominations can only be made by a Member of Parliament and signed off by the Govenor General.

Josh was sworn in at the Whakatanē District Court on Friday 23 May.

JP's need to have the ability and willingness to work and serve anyone, no matter what religion, background or ethnicity. JPs take the same oath as Judges of the High Court and District Court, in which they swear to "do right to all manner of people after the law and usages of New Zealand, without fear or favour, affection or ill-will".

Josh says he had wanted to become a Justice of the Peace for quite some time, and wanting to give back to the community in a more meaningful way. He explains "serving as a JP allows me to make a direct and positive impact on individuals and community at large".

Ka pai Josh.
